I know longline bras are one of the pinup staples but it can be difficult to make an investment in something you aren’t sure will fit or flatter you. So I tried a cheap longline bra I bought from Ebay to see if it’s worth it! I puchased it from the store Value Heaven and I obviously bought black, but it is also available in white. On Sunday morning I woke up and stared at my bra rack deciding which one I wanted to wear. Then it hit me that I really didn’t want to wear any of them! My What Katie Did cathedral bras were drying from a wash and I was partway through repairing the lace on my Parisienne Longline bra.
I am a huge lingerie lover and I didn’t know what to think when suddenly I didn’t like any of the gorgeousness surrounding me. The bras I have in my current size have all been bought in the last 2 years, and although that doesn’t seem like a long time my daily style is different to how I dressed then. 2 years ago I was also only 17 and still in high-school so it’s no wonder! I used to swing between goth and vintage styles daily but these days I am dressed vintage styled 99% of the time (but that doesn’t stop most of my wardrobe still being black). Now that I dress differently I am more interested in bullet bras and nylons than push up bras and pantyhose.
So today I am sharing with you my current lingerie lusts, the things I desire to be on my body under my clothes right this second. They are mostly vintage inspired pieces but some are just stunning things I cannot resist.
If you are a size 32D/10D then follow me on social media, as I think I’m going to be having a little bra clearout to declutter and make way for new pieces.
I have previously talked about my love for the ‘Glorified Girl’ range by Dita Von Teese in a previous blog post. I so far have the Strapless Plunge Bra, the Suspender Belt and the Bikini Brief. I would like to collect the Full Brief and Longline Bra so I can have a set with more coverage, and also Longline bras are the best. I hate all my old low rise underwear and I just feel that all briefs should be high rise!
I’ve had the Madame X black Underwired Bra (now too small for me) and Bikini Briefs as well as the white Non-Wired Bra and High Rise Briefs. My white set is by far my favorite and Madame X is definitely not a style to be overlooked. I bought my bra in a 32C but because of the soft cups the sizing is flexible, and because the briefs are adjustable at the waist it means you can still have a good fit if you are a curvy lady. I really need to get the pieces in all colourways – so far there have been 6 so I have a lot of catching up to do! It’s nice to have a comfy set of lingerie which is also edgy and makes you look amazing.
Next up is this breathtaking set by What Katie Did. The Merry Widow is actually a vintage reproduction from an original garment but updated to use modern materials. I really like all of the Gwendoline pieces and would probably purchase the Bra, Merry Widow and Panty Girdle to mix and match. I would also buy extra detachable suspender straps so that I could add more loops to the pieces and have more suspension.
I’m really into longline bras at the moment as they are so comfortable and mean you don’t get any lumps which tend to happen if you wear stretchy tops and are a little squishy. This Kate Longline Cone Bra seems like a great everyday basic which I could with any of my black underwear. Also having front hooks and eyes would make it so much easier to put on. It also has nice soft points so you’re not likely to put an eye out with it.
Yet more What Katie Did (but can you have enough?)! This time it’s the Carole set which I think looks gorgeously dark and comfortable. We are entering the warmer months at the moment and I could definitely see myself lounging on the couch wearing only this in the height of summer. The Cone Bra would be a nice silhouette to have in my arsenal and French Knickers are so exciting to wear. I’d probably have to ask them about sizing for them though due to the large difference between my waist and hips.
I own the Pinup set of lingerie which My Retro Closet released a while ago and have been meaning to add this updated set to my collection. The contrasting red satin gives a delightful pop of colour and the circle stitching is a great detail. This set looks so comfortable I could quite happily lounge in this on a fur rug, but I could also see myself wearing this under floaty chiffon blouses. It’s nice to see a vintage inspired piece which is so easy to wear and fits in well with a modern lifestyle.
I haven’t actually seen any vintage ladies talk about Carnival Bras so I’m definitely interested in trying this one out. Yet another front closure longline one. I like the lace and paneling detailing of this bra. Although I’m a sucker for black, I love the look of the Champagne coloured one too. There’s a great close up photo on HerRoom of this bra and I really like how traditional it looks. It also seems to give the model a nice subtle pointed shape. This brand has been around since 1947
I already have the Retrolution Plunge Bra and Waist Cincher but recently I saw a picture on instagram of the swoon-worthly Lady Bellentina trying on the Retrolution Corset and now I am desperate to acquire it. Although I tend to be a bit corset-snobby I do love how the busk works on this piece, and it’s interesting to see on a softer garment. I think this would be a great piece to ease people into both corsets and longline bras. It has the busk fastening at the front as well as hook and eyes at the back. If you didn’t like one of these you could probably take it to someone to get altered, or do it yourself if you’re a dab hand at sewing.
This lingerie set was actually just listed today but I knew I had to add it to the list. I already have other pieces by Paranoire and they fit superbly. This is another set which would be great for lounging and also for living in. I would love to see a boudoir shoot with this (perhaps I will have to arrange one). Also that solid silk and swiss dot contrast, that is a winning combo!
Now we are moving onto the more modern pieces I desire, I discovered this one, thanks again, to Lady Bellentina. This set is also available in Black and Navy, but this Emerald colour is so gorgeous and different. I might need it in all colourways though. It would look great under the Emerald Green Dita Von Teese Cardigan by Wheels and Dollbaby worn with a large keyhole. I love the sleek strappy details and I think this would look incredible under a black lace top as well. Also excuse me zip front fastening you are far too exciting (pssst, the briefs have a zip up back 😮 )
To finish off my list I have the Semi-Bespoke Sayuri set by Karolina Laskowska. You can bet if I ever come into a large sum of money somehow this is what I’ll be spending it on. The strappy detailing combined with the vintage kimono silk and sheer mesh is almost too much. I adore that you get to pick your fabric from a variety, it makes it that much more special and worth the price. The waist of the briefs is adjustable, again a huge plus for curvy ladies. There is actually so much which can be adjusted in this set! The Sayuri bra also features interesting sizing as the back has adjustable straps, allowing 6 inches of adjustability. This means a perfect band fit as you can adjust it to fit you which is great for people like me who float between band sizes. This design is so unique and eye catching that it’s hard not to feel like you need. But I feel like if I owned it I would simultaneously never wear it and wear it everyday without clothing.
So there’s the list of lingerie currently on my lust-list. A couple of years ago I just wanted all the lingerie I ever found attractive but now I’m leaning toward pieces that fit in better with my lifestyle. I also like being able to support ethical manufacturing. Katie of What Katie Did works closely with all the factories which manufacture their lingerie. My Retro Closet, Paranoire and Karolina Laskowska lingerie are handmade by the designer which is great to be able to support.
It’s taken me so long to get around to doing this post, I’ve been wanting to do it since my previous TLQ post but wanted to line up a bra for the next one first.
Today I will be talking about the Gossard Retrolution Staylo Plunge Bra and the Gossard Retrolution Waist Cincher.
I’ll start of by saying no, this doesn’t count as a longline bra, particularly the standards I set in my previous post. But there are reasons I’m going to include it in this series. The main one being when this bra is paired with the matching Waist Cincher Brief they overlap(on my, and other shortish bodies), and this creates all over shaping for me. Another is this is one of my all time favourite bras and deserves a mention, because it is slightly longer.
I bought this in a size 32D after hearing that it can be a little snug on some people. I think I’d be okay going down to a 30DD, but the 32D works well, and I didn’t need it on the tighter hooks the first few wears. However I did progress to the smaller ones quite quickly.
This bra is 2” long under the underwire so it is slightly longer than regular bras. This is very comfortable and makes less cutting in at the bottom line if that is an issue. Also the added brief gives a very smooth line right down the body. The bra also has quite a low back which is great for dresses which can sometimes dance around the line of bra back showing.
The wide straps on this are ♪fantastiiiic♪. Although my breasts don’t need much support at all wide straps are just so much more comfortable. The elastic is such high quality, they are the most comfortable straps of any bra I’ve ever owned. They are almost an inch wide and if that doesn’t sell it for you I’m not sure what will. They don’t have an enormous size range 30D-E, 32-36A-E, 38B-E, but it’s fairly inclusive.
No cookies – left, cookies inserted – right.
This bra comes with extra padding in the form of insertable cookies. Some days I love a bit of extra padding particularly in low V-neck dresses but it does well without. I have shallower shaped breasts so sometimes they don’t totally fill out a bra, but if the straps of this bra are tightened well then I don’t have that problem at all.
If I stretch then sometimes the brief slips under the bra at the front, but it isn’t noticeable under clothes.
Brief Briefs overview: I have a 27”ish waist and 41” hips and I found the size M cincher brief worked well for me. It doesn’t nip in my waist much, but it has nice slimming capabilities and works well smoothing my lower tummy which is my problem area. The detachable suspender parts are great quality as well, and so nice to have optional. I don’t consider the bra a longline bra unless paired with these, but I would still recommend it.
I’ve been thinking about purchasing the same set in black at some point and sewing the bra and brief together. I’d also add snaps to the crotch so I can use the bathroom. Maybe I should do a tutorial for this?
I bought this set during the famous Pinup Girl Clothing Black Friday sale at the end of last year, and some pieces are still available on the site at full retail price.
The full collection is available at Gossard, though some sizes are sold out in some coloursways. Pinup Girl Clothing have unfortunately sold out of the Blush Cincher Brief but the bra and black set are still there. Also I am wearing What Katie Did Champagne stockings.
Hope you enjoyed the second installment of The Longline Bra Quest!
The Great Longline Bra Quest (TLQ) is a series that I hope to run throughout the course of this year, and possibly longer, I cannot say how long the journey may be. I adore longline, long line, long-line, however you prefer to type it, bras. Not those ones which have a band 1/2 inch longer than the usual but ones which actually reach my waist, or attempt to.
The first in this series is the Evollove Night Sky Contour Balconnet Bra which I purchased from Bendon. I had to have some dental work done this and afterwards thought I would treat myself to some lingerie. Luckily they are currently having a end of season sale so I was able to purchase it at 30% off.
Before I get into this review I have to backtrack a little. I own one other Evollove bra which is the Twilight Dream Demi Bra. I was browsing the clearance section of a store when I spotted a stunning blue starry bra. I normally wear a 10D/32D but the closest one to my size was a 8DD/30DD, I’m a terrible person and usually wear my bras on the tightest hook when I first buy them because the band is too loose from the start. Needless to say it fit me extremely well and was very comfortable, however the brands which are easiest for me to purchase usually only start at a size 10/32 band. Sometimes they will fit properly but other times I suffer in silence or take in the bands myself.
(I dyed my hair the night before so that’s what any grey or black splotches are)
Although the bra was released for SS13 it’s still available in all sizes at Bendon, and I’m sure if you look around the internet it’ll be on international sites. It wasn’t available in a size 10D/32D, but it was in the sister size 8DD/32DD and given my previous experience with Evollove sizing I tried it on with no hesitation. It’s a comfortably snug fit and I wear it on the loosest set of hooks which is such a nice change as it will stretch slightly with wear.
I love the shape and style of it. Although Evollove is a more full busted directed brand (with cup sizes D-G) I find their shapes still work well with shallower breasts. This is a contour bra, so it has some lift but it is caused by the shapes and seams in the cup rather than a wad of padding. It has a nice amount of coverage, not too much, not too little, but it wouldn’t be suitable for a very low cut top. It has 4 pieces of plastic boning in it, one under each cup, and one on each side so that it doesn’t wrinkle it’s way up while you sit, walk or generally exist. The different lace and mesh textures make the bra more interesting while it still remains a great everyday black bra. Even with thinner knit tops the textures only show through a minimal amount which is a relief, and it’s worth noting that the centre bow is an adorable detail.
It does get a bit uncomfortable if you are in holiday slouch mode like I am. But when I’ve been out for entire days it has remained extremely comfortable, to the extent at which I didn’t feel the bra at any point. It provides a nice light rib shaping towards the waist and combined with some high waisted or underbust shapewear it would make a fantastic combo. The bra however doesn’t finish at my waist which is something I definitely prefer with my vintage styled garments. It doesn’t give me any bulges though, and if it really bothered me it would be very simple to add some wide black elastic around the bottom.
The last thing I will say is that I adore how low the back is, which means I don’t have a million hook and eyes to do up and I can wear it with things which are low cut in the back.
If you want a good, everyday longline bra then I wholeheartedly suggest this bra. It looks nice and is very comfortable. The only downside is the shorter length, but if this doesn’t bother you or you have a shorter torso just go and buy it.
Brief briefs overview: I bought the matching briefs in a size L and they are equally as comfortable. For reference I have 41” hips. The front lace panel is a nice detail and the back is ruched to perfection. Definitely worth the matching set.
This isn’t the end of my quest! In the next bra quest post I shall be looking at the Gossard Retrolution Staylo Plunge Bra in blush.
