Welcome to the second part of my review of this look from Bettie Page Lingerie. If you didn’t catch my review of the Retro Futuristic Bra you can check it out here! Today I’ll be reviewing the Black French Knickers! Continue reading
I know longline bras are one of the pinup staples but it can be difficult to make an investment in something you aren’t sure will fit or flatter you. So I tried a cheap longline bra I bought from Ebay to see if it’s worth it! I puchased it from the store Value Heaven and I obviously bought black, but it is also available in white. Continue reading
After sooo long I am finally back with a new foundation review, part of the Pale People Problems series. Since the last one I did I have tried about 5 different foundations, so I’ll be trying to cover those off.
Today I’m reviewing the Longwear 24 Hour foundation by Designer Brands Cosmetics. This is a brand I had never heard of until I went hunting in a pharmacy for some new powder. I decided to also swatch a few foundations while I was their and came away with this one! Continue reading
Today I’m posting the first of hopefully a few blog posts I will be doing relating to ‘pale people problems’, which will essentially be me trying as many foundations as I can to try and find a good one for me. I am extremely pale so I have sooo much difficulty finding something in the correct shade for me, especially as I live in a country where there isn’t a huge range of brands and it’s all really expensive.
I am reviewing the Chanel Complete Correction 30spf foundation. This was one of two foundations I found at Farmers (our local cheapish department store) that were close to matching me. This is the lightest shade ’10 Beige’, I tried other Chanel foundations on that shade but they were all too dark, this was definitely lighter than a full coverage one.
I will also be using the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in ‘Light 1 Chantilly’ which is my favourite concealer.
I squeeze out about this much foundation on the back of my hand and then also do two dabs from the doe-foot applicator of my concealer.
Next I mix them together! I found adding concealer really helped with getting a fuller coverage which I prefer. Also it gives the foundation a slightly thicker consistency.
I apply the foundation with my fingers as I seem to have lost all of my foundation brushes. The picture on the left is just the foundations, and the picture on the right is with concealer under my eyes as well. I won’t show a picture of me without makeup but as you can see from the left picture around my eyes it does have quite good coverage.
I then apply a tiny amount of concealer to my lids and then powder the whole thing with Ben Nye Super White powder. I have been using this powder for years as it helps to both set and lighten foundations. This foundation on its own is a close match but the white powder perfects it. If you are super pale and need a setting powder buy the Ben Nye one I have a 8oz container of it that was $35 and I’ve been using it for 3-4 years and still haven’t run out.
This is my makeup all finished besides lipstick. I didn’t use a moisturiser or primer when I was wearing this foundation, a) I couldn’t afford one and b) this has a really good level of moisture in it. It it labelled as a long-wear product and I think heavy powdering also helps.
This is 3 hours after foundation application. As you can see a couple of freckles on my face aren’t completely covered, I could dot concealer on them but they aren’t super noticable. I find powder contour and blush blend well into this and don’t end up patchy.
7 hours in. This looks as good as when I applied it! My face does look a little more textured, though this is probably due to not prepping it at all. I also find I get a few little bumps around the edge of my nose which I think is due to a bit of oil buildup. I can use my finger to wipe them away but it will also take off a little foundation and it isn’t super noticeable.
This is after a full 12 hours! I had had a shower which is why some has come away at the hairline and my lipstick was wearing off. I’m rocking way more eye wrinkles as it was past midnight, but the concealer didn’t crease at all after powdered. There is also some wear on my nose (I rub it a lot) and around my chin as I think I was resting it on my hand a lot.
I really adore this foundation but it retails at $90 a tube! Also you don’t get too much product, it contains 30ml and lasted me about a month and a half to two months. If I had the money I would definitely keep purchasing this though. I find it lasts really well, has a really nice finish and is a nice light colour for me when powdered. The coverage is light but mixed with the concealer I love it!
Welcome to another lingerie review, I feel like it’s been too long but let’s be honest even if I got lingerie once a week it would feel like too long! Today I’m going to be reviewing a set by ParaNoire Design, one of my favourite indie lingerie designers! I’ve previously reviewed some mystery panties by them here.
As soon as I saw the picture of the underwear put up on Facebook I knew I had to have the set! I’m going to actually have to tell a short story about my order process so you can understand just how fab ParaNoire is!
So I first saw a post about the underwear on the 20th of Feb and I was instantly in love “So, if Piet Mondrian and Windows 95 had a secret lovechild and it turned out to be a panty… this might be it. I’m weirdly in love with this very 90ies print & palette” was the caption and yaaaassss. I adore the 90’s I think everything from that era is hideously gorgeous the clothing silhouettes, the prints, the music, Leonardo DiCaprio’s hair, I could go on!
Anyway on the 25th they posted about the pants again which jogged my memory! I had a voucher from them for a competition I entered so I decided to use it and bought them on the 26th. Then the next day I saw that they had posted about a matching bralette (!!!!) I commented saying essentially ‘I need this release it asap and I will buy’ and I got a response saying that the sample would be finished as soon as some new elastic arrived then I could make an order and have it shipped with the underwear! So it was listed and I bought it on the 29th and it was shipped by 00:30 on the 1st! Crazy fast and amazing service!
For reference I received it on the 17th of March so it was only 2 and a half weeks to ship from Germany which is pretty speedy for something to get to this little country! Anyway onto the actual review!
ParaNoire’s envelopes are made out of outdated topographic maps so they are recycled and recyclable, and the invoice sleeves are even 100% paper! The inner bags are plastic to make sure things don’t get wet but the inner brown paper is recycled and old wrapping paper is used sometimes too.
Here’s my nicely folded lingerie!
The lingerie is always made to order and it is sized by centimetre measurements. I bought the bra in the size 75/92 as my underbust measurement is 77cm and my bust measurement is 95cm so it was the closest option. I also bought the briefs in the size 106 as my hips measurement is 107cm. There are many sizes and they are so close together measurement-wise it’s so easy to get a great fit, there’s no guess work about ‘will a medium work?’ or anything.
First of this lingerie is so soft, it’s made from a cotton jersey which is great as it means this lingerie is also very breathable! The elastic is really nice and soft too with a plush back and there’s no cutting in at all. I have trouble with straps slipping off my shoulders as mine are quite narrow so the racerback is really nice.
Look at this print though! Isn’t it dreadfully perfect! I love all the colours in it and the variety means you can match it with so many other underwear if you haven’t got around to washing the matching underwear yet (I am so bad with washing). I also love that this is actually older fabric so it makes it extra special!
The labels are hand stamped with waterproof ink and I believe a typewriter is used to put the sizing on. They are very cute and a nice unique touch. They are easy to remove if you are inclined to do so as there is only a small part stitched down. I always leave my labels in and you don’t notice these at all throughout the day.
I like a very snug band and this bra is a little on the looser side. I find that it can ride up a bit during the day because of that. But it is exceedingly comfy and it’s not a big issue, just if you like a tighter band I suggest sizing down. This is the ultimate lounging set though, not one part of it will be uncomfortable no matter what you do!
I haven’t owned a pair of boyshort cut underwear for about 3 years and I am so happy to have these. It took me about an hour to get used to them as I was so used to regular cuts and high-waisted rises but now I am loving them! I love the partial leg coverage and I think I will definitely buy more in this cut.
Dun-dun! I ruined them! I handwash my lingerie most of the time but I have one awful pair of black underwear that will never stop seeping dye, I’ve washed them so much and they still do! Anyway I made the tragic mistake of leaving them in a wet pile before hanging them up. I’ve tried to remove the stain with a couple of cleaners but without success. Oh well I guess I have to order another pair now ;).
And there we have it. I adore this lingerie and it is my #1 go to comfort lingerie at the moment. These are truly well made, I’ve never seen any deterioration from any of my ParaNoire pieces and they are constructed very well. You can buy it from the ParaNoire Design Etsy store and this particular set costs around $125 NZD, which is a great price to pay for something this comfy and well made.
Thank you to ParaNoire (Eva and Liz) for being so lovely to me all the time, and for being so quick with making and shipping the lingerie <3!!
Thanks for reading!
So as some of you may know April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Last year I did 4 blog posts over the month of April showing off all the lipsticks I wore for that month to raise awareness for the Red My Lips campaign. If you haven’t read them they can be found here.
This year I have decided to just do one blog post showing off my 5 favourite lipsticks, but this year for every view I get on this blog post until 11th May (as that is a month from now) I will donate a dollar to Red My Lips. A lot of people choose to take part in the Red My Lips campaign by wearing red lipstick everyday, which is a good way to raise awareness. But I am in a position where I should be able to make a small donation at the end of the month.
So onto the lipsticks! These are in no particular order as I love them all and it was hard enough picking 5 favourites.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil – Mysterious Red
This lipstick is a must have in your collection. I love the Velvet Matte Pencils by NARS as they are something so small and easy to keep in your bag and it’s so fast to put on. If I’m ever in a rush I grab this. It has a great formula that goes on matte and stays matte but isn’t too drying on the lips. It starts to feel a little dry on my lips after about 12 hours of wear. It has a nice texture that will last all day with minimal touch ups. I adore this shade in particular as it’s a very bright true red, it’s great in summer and a great pop of colour in winter. I also have this lipstick in the shade Cruella and I prefer Mysterious Red just a tiny bit more for how bold it is.
NARS Hardwired Lipstick – Deadly Catch
This is another NARS lipstick I totally adore. It has a beautiful creamy texture which easily glides on but has enough grip that it has a good staying power. I can usually get through a high-tea without touch ups but a full meal will usually need a little in the centre. I love the colour of this too as it’s another bright blue-based red. This has a great amount of moisture in it without giving it a super glossy look.
Pretty Zombie Cosmetics – Zombettie
This is an amazing liquid to matte lipsticks. I bought this first in January of 2014 before liquid to matte lipsticks became really popular and have loved it from the start. This red is more yellow based, and it’s a buildable colour so you can use a thin layer or layer it up to a deeper blood red. This will need to be touched up after eating, it often wears completely off in the middle. It’s not too hard to add more and it blends into the already dried lipstick pretty easily. I have Black Cat which I am even more obsessed with and I just want all the shades as there are so many blue/green/purples.
Jeffree Star – Redrum
Of course, it’s Jeffree Star. I have to say the hype is real. This lipstick is incredible. I don’t have a picture of me wearing it as I’ve used up my first one and have yet to get another. I love the colour of this and I love the many other more creative shades in the range. I find this isn’t entirely transfer proof but it doesn’t need touch ups after eating. It’s very comfortable and doesn’t crack or flake away during the day.
Besame – American Beauty
This is a colour I wasn’t 100% sure on buying but I am so glad I did. This is described as a ‘cool berry shade’ and can look so different depending on how it’s worn. In the pictures above I’ve gone with a thicker coat which looks quite red, but a thin coat will bring out the pinky berry. It’s a lovely creamy lipstick which does need touch ups but is very moisturising and feels lovely to wear. In the below picture I’ve added a small amount of MBA Cosmetics’ Kohl lipstick to it to perfectly match it to my Rouge Noir Dita <3. It’s also a wonderful lip tint with a touch added to some lipgloss for a more natural look.
So there we are! After so long I’ve decided on my 5 favourite lipsticks! A range here from pencil to liquid-matte to regular lipsticks.
If you can please consider donating to a charity which aids people who are victims of sexual assault or who help spread information about it. Of course don your best red lisptick and get to social media with the tags #redmylips #sexualassaultawarenessmonth #saam to help spread awareness. Red My Lips is a great organisination to donate to, as is are of the Rape Crisis centres in NZ or if you are international your local one.

Welcome to this post which may become a regular series, I thought I’d introduce you all to some fabulous pinup/vintage ladies who have become my friends!
Today I want to introduce one of my ‘Pinup Pals’ from Wellington, Miss Pixie Dust! Pixie is such a gorgeous, funny and sassy babe! We see each other at almost all of the events we Wellington Pinups hold and she is also a frequent customer of my shop. I love being able to alter and make clothing for her, as it’s someone who dresses similarly to me but has her own style, and what a style! I absolutely love it when she comes in with new vintage goodies for me to adjust!
Miss Pixie Dust is also a finalist for Miss Pinup New Zealand 2016! So exciting! She’s also the only entrant from the Wellington region so we are all rooting for her. You can vote for her as Miss Publicity here.
Here are some quick questions so you can get to know her better!
Where were you born?
I was born in Germany
What do you do?
I’m a Therapist in mental health and before that I used to work as a Social Worker. One of my passions is working with adolescents.
When did you first become interested in the pinup/vintage style?/Why were you drawn to the style?
I’ve always been drawn to the 40s and 50s era, mainly because it connects me with my grandmother who lives trough World War II. I remember watching Classic movies with my nana on Sunday afternoons and listening to her telling me stories about her experiences of the war. I’m in love with the fashion of this era, too- especially the workwear and teddy girl style.
I adore Pixie in her workwear styles!
What do you like about being a Wellington Pinup?
What I love most about being a Wellington pinup are the relationships I’ve formed with the gorgeous women in our wee community. The other thing would be the freedom of self-expression it gives me.
Why did you decide to enter Miss Pinup New Zealand?
Entering miss Pinup NZ was another way of challenging myself to do something outside of my comfort zone. I had encouragement from my friends to give it a go and I enjoy bringing my quirky personality out to play! My day job is about empowering people to live a fulfilled and content life- to do things that make them happy and feeds their souls. I guess I should practice what I preach smile emoticon
What would you tell to someone who is interested or starting out with dressing pinup/vintage?
Find out what works for you, celebrate your individuality and tag along to one of out meet-ups. Everyone is welcome!!
So there she is! Do please remember to vote for her as Miss Publicity and check out the other contestants too!
You can (do it) follow Pixie on Facebook here
And (highly recommended) on instagram: @mspixiedust
Hope you enjoyed this, I’d like to continue this and make it fortnight or monthly so you can meet all my friends!
