My Top 5 Eye Contour Shadows

Something that I really overlooked when I started doing vintage makeup was contouring my eye. Over the years as I have gotten much more into both makeup and the style and find myself not going a day without contouring my eye now! It really gives your eye definition and enhances the shape of your cateye. It is also a technique used in most makeup looks.

For my eyes on each day I concealed then powdered my lid with some translucent powder. I used a white highlight on the inner corner of my eye and lashline. I finally blended the eyeshadow into my crease and below the eye. I finished with eyeliner and mascara as you can see.

And here they are:

1. Smashbox – Bourbon

ec1-1

This is Bourbon by Smashbox, this was part of the On The Rocks – Photo Op palette which I reviewed a while ago. I still adore this shadow and I am so glad I purchased the palette.

ec1-2

Here it is swatched, the first swatch is done with a brush and then blended out, the second is one brush swipe and the third is swiped once with my finger.

As you can see the glitter chunks mostly disappear when blended. It is mostly cool toned but does have a little warmth when blended out. What I do like is that it can look really cool toned and dark when used heavy handed, but can also be done with a lighter touch for a different look. I love using this eyeshadow on its own because of this and have actually had makeup artists at stores ask me what ‘eyeshadows’ I am wearing when it is just this one.

2. Estée Lauder – Mink

ec2-1

On my palette this shadow is just called ‘Mink’ but I think it might also be the shade ‘Lavish Mink’. Either way mine came in  a palette from one of those ‘Buy 2 things and get a free bag of stuff’ deals.

I adore this shadow, I have owned it for several years (and desperately need a new one) and it has been my go-to for just as long. I admit I haven’t worn it in a few months as it is so hard to get anything out of the pan at this point.

ec2-2

The first swatch is done with a brush and then blended out, the second is one brush swipe and the third is swiped once with my finger. The finger swipe is pretty patchy because there is barely any left in the pan.

I do adore how deep and dark this shade is. This is the perfect cool toned dark brown, and it is perfectly matte. It’s so rich and can be used for sweet pinup looks, but I also love it for my darker gothier looks too, the coolness makes it ideal. I would love a full sized one as I would probably use it as a face contour as well!

3. NYX Cosmetics – Milan

ec3-1

I got this eyeshadow in my Wanderlust Advent calendar by NYX Cosmetics but I believe this shade was also used in the Wanderlust Lip & Eye Palettes.

This is the warmest shade featured on this list so will work for warmer toned skin.

ec3-2

The first swatch is done with a brush and then blended out, the second is one brush swipe and the third is swiped once with my finger.

I like this shade for days I want a warmer look, which I usually do if I’m wearing lighter coloured clothing. It’s also a little lighter in shade so if I want a very daytime look it works nicely. I also like to use this shade for a warm contour and I have done in the picture below.

4. NYX Cosmetics – Morocco

ec4-1

This is another shade which I got in my Wanderlust Advent calendar but I am pretty certain I have seen this in the Wanderlust Lip & Eye Palettes.

ec4-2

The first swatch is done with a brush and then blended out, the second is one brush swipe and the third is swiped once with my finger.

This is another really dark matte which I adore. I actually use this most days as my face contour too as it’s such a lovely cool tone. It’s almost a purpley brown when it’s been blended which creates a really nice look. If I feel like having a little extra depth to my eyes I’ll usually use the Milan shade and blend it out far and focus Morocco in the crease.

Sorry if it looks a bit warm in the picture below it was just the auto colour temperature setting in my camera.

5. Urban Decay – Delete

ec5-1

This is another one I got from a palette and I reviewed the whole of Vice4 here if you want to read. This is also available in the Nocturnal Shadow Box which is available now and apparently was also available as a single but I am having trouble finding it.

ec5-2

The first swatch is done with a brush and then blended out, the second is one brush swipe and the third is swiped once with my finger. This is a slightly warmer tone which you can see in the brush swatch most clearly.

When I first bought this I was completely obsessed using it on both the eyes and face. This feels like a very universal shade that would suit most skintones in some way. I have seen some seriously gorgeous looks with this shade. This is my favourite one to use under my eyes.

Comparison

And here is a shot of all the shades swatched together for comparison. You can really see the difference in tone here which was actually a really good reference for me. I can also see why I love all these colours so much!

ec

As you can see even though these are 5 swatches of (mostly) matte brown eyeshadows there are actually huge differences between them. There are a few I’ve gotten only through palettes or collections and I really wish I could re-purchase them just so I have backups for the future.

I think that Bourbon and Mink are my two top colours, I just love how dark they are. Bourbon is so rich and luscious whereas Mink has a very cool cave like feeling as it’s a bit more grey.

Hope you all enjoyed this, and feel free to let me know your favourite contour shades in the comments!
